Kangaroo Plus

My last post spoke about the benefits of the $99 Kangaroo Mobile Desktop as a cheap upgrade to those users still holding on to old computers running older versions of Windows. But what if you wanted Windows 10 Professional instead of Windows 10 Home that ships with it?  Enter the Kangaroo Plus.

The Kangaroo Plus has everything found in the original model: a Intel Atom x5-Z8500 Cherry Trail processor, a built-in fingerprint scanner, microSD slot, an integrated battery that lasts up to four hours, and a detachable dock with HDMI, USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 ports. What makes the Kangaroo Plus different is that it has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, which is double what the first Kangaroo has. In addition, unlike the original Kangaroo which ships pre-installed with Windows 10 Home, the Kangaroo Plus does not come with any OS installed. This means that you can installed Windows 10 Professional on the Kangaroo Plus.

So why did I install Window 10 Professional on the Kangaroo Plus? This allows me to use Bitlocker for encryption. Bitlocker is a tool included in Windows that can be used to encrypt data in a drive. This helps protect the operating system and user data by ensuring that a computer is not tampered with, even if it is left unattended, lost, or stolen. However, in order to properly use Bitlocker to encrypt a drive, you must have a TPM chip on your computer. The Kangaroo Plus, as well the original, contains a TPM chip. A TPM (Trusted Platform Module) chip is used to generate and store secure cryptographic keys. This is important because of the portability of Kangaroo. If you are going to carrying this around, you want to make sure that your data is secure. Combine the use of Bitlocker/TPM with the built-in fingerprint scanner on the side that can be set it up for Windows Hello authentication and you have a device that could possibly be used as a travel computer for businesses. Not too bad for a computer the size of a cell phone.
